I used CraigShopper a lot. Hey, it was on friggin’ “Open at Login”.
I use a lot of standard search syntax filters modfiers (you know, like ‘car +Ford +red’). I figured out pretty fast the returned results were erratic, sometimes actually hiding the very item I was looking for and showing others that didn’t match the search. For example, I might search for KitchenAid microwave and get a list showing some units that were microwave/convection oven combos. So cut the list down and look at just those I’d search ‘KitchedAid microwave +convection” and get a return of ’no items found’. I was like, ‘wait, you just showed me three of these!’ and if I took off the ‘+convection’ from the search string, they came right back. I discovered that over a year ago, but I was curious so I did email support and asked for some guidance. Support replied that … well ... IF they ever me maybe, I guess I could tell you then….
Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned problems with not getting all my search results. Soon after, I started getting plenty. I fact I started to get a return for the same ad 5 or 6 times (one for each instance of the nearby regions I searched (we have a lot of them in the Bay Area). And that wouldn’t be so bad really, but … there was only ONE real returned listing out of the 5 or 6 that listed. You had to click on each one of them to find the ‘prize’ (the one that actually contained any text or images”.
I loved being able to shop and mark off ‘favorites’ for what I liked. I would have liked it even more if there was a way to track which ones you replied to and keep track of the communications for that item. But I learned fast that even the ‘Favorites’ wasn’t too useful, becaue they were lost every time I quit. They were also lost when I crashed, which started to to be more often … and then REALLY often .. at least once per session. Along with crashes, the graphics started getting buggy. It would get into a state where you couldn’t return to the main list of searches you created because the ‘drawer’ was stuck where you couldn’t get ahold if it to pull it back. The only way around this was to quit (and there went your favorites for the day again). I contacted support about the crashes and, well, they’re probably still busy my reply ready for the question I had about search syntax a year or so back. I’m sure they’ll answer me when they can, in another year or two.
Anyway, the problems don’t really matter so much anymore because, everytime I try to use the app now, it does something Craigslist considers insulting or rude or something and the serve automatically bans me access to all of Craigslist. I have to email some support address there and, usually a few days later, I am allowed to shop again.
Bottom line, I miss it now and haven’t found any good OS X alternative but nonethless … if you see an software update come out that says these problems are fixed, buy it by all means, you’ll probably really like it. I haven’t seen an update in ages, though. Maybe you’d just like to email support and ask them? There may still be a Craigslist by the time the support reply reaches you...
